Interpath Services, as part of the Bunzl group, is stepping up its efforts in tackling climate change and committing to being net zero by 2030.
The roadmap toward this ambitious goal involves a dedicated focus on minimizing emissions from both the fleet (scope 1) and facilities (scope 2) across the Asia Pacific region.
Scott Mayne, Managing Director of Bunzl Asia Pacific, emphasizes the necessity of this commitment, stating, "We are serious about playing our part in reducing emissions across the business. We want to support global efforts to limit warming, minimize biodiversity loss, and help create a net-zero economy by 2030. We believe in creating a sustainable environment for us and for those who follow."
Interpath Services, as a trusted partner to its customers, collaborates closely with leading companies across sectors to achieve sustainability objectives, recognizing the importance of transitioning to sustainable products, packaging, and reducing waste to support a circular economy. The commitment to net zero within a short timeframe underscores Interpath's responsiveness to stakeholder priorities, particularly in addressing climate change concerns.
Felicity Kelly, Head of Sustainability for Bunzl Asia Pacific, highlights that carbon emission reduction has been a central focus, with a significant 3% reduction achieved between 2020-2021 through site consolidation and efficiency improvements.
Ferm Calzado-Munoz, Group Real Estate Manager, shares insights into the ongoing focus on further reducing emissions, including investments in best practice facility design and construction. The initiative of a new Sydney distribution centre, a 6-star GreenStar-rated facility, exemplifies the efficiency gains achievable through thoughtful design.
Looking ahead, Interpath Service aims to install on-site solar panels in key distribution centres by 2023 and is actively transitioning to hybrid vehicles in its passenger fleet. Investments in renewable electricity and credible carbon offsetting programs are also on the agenda to address unavoidable emissions.
As a global entity with operations across more than 30 countries and recognizing the magnitude of climate change, Bunzl APAC is committed to ambitious action. Being part of the "Business Ambition for 1.5 C" campaign and the "Race to Zero" underscores Bunzl APAC's dedication to science-based, net-zero-aligned emissions reduction targets.
Globally, the Bunzl group has set targets for scopes 1 and 2, including a 25% improvement in carbon efficiency by 2025 and 50% by 2030 (against a 2019 baseline). Additionally, there's a commitment to 100% group-wide renewable energy procurement by 2030, with a net-zero target by 2050, encompassing scope 3. Progress is well underway, with a 12% improvement in carbon efficiency and a 60% reduction in carbon intensity since 2010, as highlighted in the 2021 reporting.
Ms. Kelly affirms that Bunzl Asia Pacific's net zero target aligns seamlessly with Bunzl's global commitments. Collaborating with partners on scope 3 emissions through 2050 and working closely with freight providers to close the gap on emissions reflect Interpath's commitment to meeting the 2050 target.
